Gresh, Jane Lindskold, and Alan Rodgers. Some time ago I reviewed Sherlock Holmes and the Shadwell Shadows, the first in a series by James Lovegrove featuring the famous detective as you’ve never seen him before: battling wits against the diabolical creations of H.P. So my advice for those that are hard-core Lovecraft fans is to not expect stories of his style but rather simply enjoy the works of talented authors such as Mort Castle, Will Murray, Lois H. In fact it isn’t until the very last story (the excellent “Ghoulmaster” by Brian McNaughton) that we get the more traditional Lovecraftian style horror, one that describes the bizarre nature of Lovecraft’s stories along with a similar plot. I think it is fair to say that all of these stories except one are fairly main stream, light horror stories that are purposefully connected to the Miskatonic University, which serves as a convenience because…strange things happen there all the time. Instead, they are more “modernized” for today’s readers. I enjoyed most of the stories here although I would not necessarily say they were indicative of Lovecraft’s style. Lovecraft's 1922 story "Herbert West–Reanimator", the school appeared in numerous Cthulhu Mythos stories by Lovecraft as well as other writers, as evidenced by this collection of 13 short stories (plus one introductory story disguised as a “letter from the president to incoming students.” After a couple of years’ respite, I was interested to see what other authors had written in this milieu so when I stumbled across this collection in my favorite used book store, I grabbed it.įor the uninitiated, Miskatonic University is a fictional university located in Arkham, a fictitious town in Essex County, Massachusetts. I'm also reminded of how good Cthuhlu's Reign was, and it means that Miskatonic University disappoints me that much more. I picked up Cthuhlu 2000 directly after this one, and I'm midway through the first story in that one, and it's far, far better than anything offered here. Bad enough to make the good stuff forgettable. Unfortunately, many of the stories are unforgettable, some enjoyable, others just plain bad.
